When someone searches for a service near them, the map results usually show up before any website. Each of those listings is a Google Business Profile, and for a local business it can bring in more calls than the website itself.
It's free, and you don't need any technical skills to set it up. You do need to fill it in carefully and keep it alive. This guide covers both.
- Claim and verify your profile, then fill in every section.
- Pick the most specific primary category you can.
- Add real photos and keep your hours current.
- Ask for reviews and reply to every one of them.
Claim and verify your profile
Start at google.com/business and search for your business name. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create one. Google then asks you to verify that the business is really yours.
If someone else already manages your listing, like a former employee or an old marketing company, you can request access through Google. It can take a few days, so start early if you're planning other changes to your profile.
Choose the right category
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service: "House painter" rather than "Contractor", "Health insurance agency" rather than "Insurance agency".
You can add a few secondary categories for other services you offer, but keep them honest. Categories that don't match what you do won't help you.
Set your address or service area
If customers come to you, show your address. If you go to them, like most contractors and home services, you can hide your address and list the cities and areas you serve instead.
Getting this right matters because it decides where you can show up. A service-area business that lists only a home address may only appear near that address, while a well-defined service area tells Google the full map of places you cover.
- Use your real business address, or a service area
- List the towns you actually serve
- Keep the name exactly as it appears on your sign and paperwork
- A PO box or a virtual office as your address
- Adding keywords to your business name, like "Best Painter Houston"
- Listing areas you rarely work in
Fill in every detail
A complete profile looks more trustworthy to customers, and it gives Google more to work with. Go through each section once, carefully.
It's worth doing in one sitting, with your website open next to you, so the details match exactly. Small differences, like an old phone number or a different business name format, are easy to miss and can confuse customers.
Add real photos
Photos are one of the first things people look at on a profile. Add pictures of your work, your team, your vehicles and, if customers visit you, the outside of your building so they can find it.
Customers can add photos to your profile too, and you can't always control which ones appear. Adding your own good photos regularly makes sure the best pictures of your work are the ones people see first.
Ask for reviews, and reply to every one
Reviews help customers decide, and they also matter to Google. The simplest way to get more is to ask, at the moment a customer is happiest with your work.
- 1Open your Business Profile while signed in to Google.
- 2Look for the option to ask for reviews and copy the short link.
- 3Save it in your phone, ready to text to customers.
- 4Send it the day you finish a job, with a short thank-you.
Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and friendly way. A thoughtful reply to a bad review often reassures future customers more than another five-star review would.
Keep it alive
A profile isn't something you set up once and forget. Update your hours before holidays, add photos as you finish jobs, and share an update or offer from time to time. Small, regular activity shows customers, and Google, that you're open for business.
Think of it like a shop window. A window with fresh displays and correct opening hours tells passers-by you're open and doing well. One with faded signs and last year's hours tells them something different, even if the business is thriving.
On our Growth plan we manage your Google Business Profile for you: setup, photos, updates and replies to reviews, alongside your website.
