Search for "plumber near me" and Google shows a map with a few businesses on it, before any regular results. Being one of them can mean a steady stream of calls. Not being there can mean customers never find you.

Google explains, in its own help pages, that local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Nothing secret, and no tricks. Here is what each one means for your business.

Key takeaways
  • Relevance: make it obvious what you do.
  • Distance: be clear about where you work.
  • Prominence: reviews, a good website and a known name.
  • Small, regular effort beats one big push.

Relevance: how well you match the search

Google first tries to understand what you do, and how well that matches what the person typed. It reads your Business Profile categories, your services and the words on your website.

This is the factor you have the most control over. If Google isn't sure you offer a service, it's less likely to show you for it. Spelling out each service, on your profile and your website, removes the guesswork.

Make your relevance clear

Distance: how far you are from the searcher

This is the one you can't change: someone searching from across town will usually see businesses closer to them. What you can do is make it clear which areas you serve, so Google doesn't have to guess.

This is also why the same search gives different results in different neighborhoods. You can't be the closest business to everyone, but you can make sure Google clearly knows every area you cover.

Prominence: how well known you are

Google also looks at how established and trusted a business seems. Reviews play a big part, along with your website and how often your business is mentioned elsewhere online.

Prominence builds slowly, which is good news for patient businesses. Every review, every accurate listing and every useful page adds up over time, and it's hard for a competitor to copy years of steady reputation.

Reviews

How many you have, how recent they are, and whether you reply. A steady trickle of new reviews is worth more than a burst from years ago.

In practice: Ask every happy customer, and reply to every review.

Your website

A fast, clear website that matches your profile helps Google trust the information it shows about you.

In practice: Same name, phone and services on your website and your profile.

Mentions elsewhere

Listings like Yelp, Nextdoor, Apple Maps or your local chamber of commerce show that you're a real, established business.

In practice: Correct, matching details on the listings that matter in your area.

What doesn't help

There is a lot of advice out there about local search. Some of it is out of date, and some of it can get your profile suspended.

Most of these shortcuts promise quick results, and some even work for a while. But they put your profile at risk, and a suspended profile can take a long time to recover. The steady, honest work is slower, and it lasts.

Worth your time
  • Filling in every part of your profile
  • Asking for reviews and replying to them
  • Adding real photos regularly
  • Keeping your hours and details current
Skip it
  • Stuffing keywords into your business name
  • Fake or paid reviews
  • Creating several profiles for one business
  • Paying for "guaranteed first place"

A simple monthly routine

Local search rewards consistency more than any single big change. Twenty minutes a month is enough to keep your profile healthy.

The point isn't to obsess over your position every day. It's to keep your profile active and accurate, so that when someone nearby searches for what you do, Google has every reason to show you.

Try this · 20 minutes
Your 20-minute monthly check
  1. 1Search for your main service and town on your phone, and see where you appear.
  2. 2Add three or four new photos of recent work to your Business Profile.
  3. 3Reply to any new reviews, and send your review link to recent customers.
  4. 4Check your hours, phone number and services are still right everywhere.

How long does it take?

Local search builds gradually. Fixing your profile details can help fairly quickly, but reviews, photos and website content build up over months. That's why consistency matters more than any single change: the businesses that show up most are usually the ones that keep at it.

That can be frustrating if you're hoping for quick results. But it also means the effort you put in keeps working for you. A good review from two years ago is still helping today.

Why results look different for everyone

If you search for your own business from home and a customer searches from across town, you'll see different results. Location, device and even past searches can affect what Google shows. That's why "Where do I rank?" doesn't have a single answer.

Instead of chasing one position, focus on the things you control: a complete profile, regular reviews, real photos and a clear website. Those improve your chances everywhere, not just in one search.
